ALANIS HIGHER EDUCATION BILL EXPANDING COMMON COURSE NUMBERING SYSTEM HEADS FOR FULL ASSEMBLY VOTE

SACRAMENTO— Yesterday, Assemblymember Juan Alanis announced that AB 1728 passed the Assembly Appropriations Committee. The bill expands the Common Course Numbering (CCN) system within the California Community Colleges (CCC) to include firefighting and law enforcement courses.

“I am grateful to my colleagues for their bipartisan support in passing this common-sense measure that will make it easier for students taking less traditional community college courses to register for classes,” said Assemblymember Alanis.

This legislation builds upon AB 1111 (Berman), which established the Common Course Numbering system to ensure that general education courses shared a common course number across all California community colleges. The previous numbering system often caused confusion for students, particularly those transferring from one college to another.

AB 1728 expands the existing CCN system to include police and fire courses, recognizing that many students pursuing careers in those fields are not following the traditional four-year university pathway around which the current system is primarily structured.

“California is facing first responder shortages, and we need to ensure there are fewer barriers for prospective students seeking the education and training necessary to pursue careers that are critical to keeping our communities safe,” said Assemblymember Alanis.

The bill passed the Assembly Appropriations Committee and will now advance to the Assembly Floor for consideration.Assemblymember Juan Alanis represents the 22nd Assembly District, which includes the communities of Modesto, Turlock, Ceres, Denair, Patterson, Gustine, Newman, Hilmar, Ballico, Snelling, Keyes, Grayson, Crows Landing, Diablo Grande, Stevinson, & Empire.
