ALANIS BILL ON SAFE NARCOTICS DISPOSAL PASSES ASSEMBLY UNANIMOUSLY

SACRAMENTO— Today, the California State Assembly unanimously passed AB 1612 by Assemblymember Juan Alanis (R-Modesto), advancing the bill to the State Senate for consideration. The measure directs the California Department of Justice to establish statewide regulations for the safe disposal of seized dangerous drugs.

“As a former law enforcement officer, I understand the serious risks associated with storing these dangerous narcotics for extended periods of time,” said Assemblymember Alanis. “AB 1612 creates a clear statewide framework to help agencies safely manage disposal while protecting officers, evidence personnel, and the public.”

California law enforcement agencies continue to seize growing quantities of fentanyl, methamphetamine, heroin, and other hazardous narcotics, yet agencies lack clear guidance on how those substances should be safely stored, transported, and destroyed once they are no longer needed as evidence.

The issue has become increasingly urgent following the closure of California’s last in-state incineration facility, leaving many agencies with limited disposal options and inconsistent practices.

AB 1612 now moves to the California State Senate for consideration.

Assemblymember Juan Alanis represents the 22nd Assembly District, which includes the communities of Modesto, Turlock, Ceres, Denair, Patterson, Gustine, Newman, Hilmar, Ballico, Snelling, Keyes, Grayson, Crows Landing, Diablo Grande, Stevinson, & Empire.
