ALANIS BILL STRENGTHENING JUDICIAL DISCRETION ON SEX OFFENDERS ADVANCES TO STATE SENATE

SACRAMENTO— Assemblymember Juan Alanis announced today that AB 1568 passed the Assembly Floor with unanimous bipartisan support and now advances to the Senate for consideration.

AB 1568 strengthens judicial review of petitions seeking removal from California’s sex offender registry by requiring courts to verify participation in, or successful completion of, a California Sex Offender Management Board-certified treatment program for eligible Tier 1 and Tier 2 registrants.

“Public safety decisions should be based on complete and verified information,” said Assemblymember Alanis. “AB 1568 helps ensure courts have a clearer picture when reviewing requests to be removed from the sex offender registry.”

The bill addresses gaps in the current review process that have made it difficult for courts and prosecutors to consistently confirm treatment participation, particularly in older cases where records may be incomplete or unavailable.

“Having spent nearly 30 years in law enforcement, including investigating crimes against children, I understand how important accountability and transparency are in these cases,” Alanis added. “This measure strengthens the integrity of the review process while supporting informed judicial decisions.”

AB 1568 now heads to the Senate for consideration.

Assemblymember Juan Alanis represents the 22nd Assembly District, which includes the communities of Modesto, Turlock, Ceres, Denair, Patterson, Gustine, Newman, Hilmar, Ballico, Snelling, Keyes, Grayson, Crows Landing, Diablo Grande, Stevinson, & Empire.
