SACRAMENTO— Today, Assemblymember Alanis announced that his bill, AB 1572, passed unanimously out of the Assembly Committee on Appropriations.
“I’m grateful for the chair and committee members’ consideration of this bill,” said Assemblymember Alanis. “Protecting our youth is a very important to me, and I’m proud to see the committee support this endeavor.”
AB 1572 codifies CIF’s policy requiring high school sports officials to meet the same background check standards as other adults working with students and establishes statewide safety training requirements for consistency. The bill phases in new safeguards, including a requirement that by July 1, 2028, officials must obtain and maintain an Activity Supervisor Clearance Certificate from the Commission on Teacher Credentialing to remain eligible to officiate. It also increases transparency by requiring the CTC to publicly list individuals whose certificates are suspended or revoked, and clarifies that CIF maintains the eligibility system for officials but is not their employer.
AB 1572 will now move to the Assembly Floor for a final vote in the Assembly.
Assemblymember Juan Alanis represents the 22nd Assembly District, which includes the communities of Modesto, Turlock, Ceres, Denair, Patterson, Gustine, Newman, Hilmar, Ballico, Snelling, Keyes, Grayson, Crows Landing, Diablo Grande, Stevinson, & Empire.
