ALANIS ANNOUNCES PASSING OF STREET SAFETY BILL

SACRAMENTO – Assemblymember Juan Alanis (R-Modesto) announced today that his bill to improve DUI training for peace officers has successfully passed the Assembly Public Safety Committee, marking an important step toward improving roadway safety and strengthening impaired driving enforcement throughout California.

Every day, Californians are put at risk by impaired drivers,” said Assemblymember Alanis. “AB 1814 ensures that officers across the state have the consistent, high-quality training they need to recognize impairment, remove dangerous drivers from our roads, and ultimately save lives.”

AB 1814 would establish a statewide minimum training requirement for peace officers assigned to traffic enforcement, requiring at least 16 hours of instruction on field sobriety testing, identifying signs of drug and alcohol impairment, report writing, and courtroom testimony. Officers would need to complete the training within one year of assignment and retake it if they return to traffic enforcement after an absence of two or more years.

By establishing a clear and consistent training requirement, AB 1814 will better equip officers to identify impairment, especially drug-related impairment, and strengthen enforcement efforts to keep California’s roads safe.

AB 1814 passed unanimously and now moves to the Assembly Appropriations Committee for consideration.
