AB 335 & AB 355 Advance 8-0 Out of the Assembly Committee on Public Safety

SACRAMENTO – Assemblymember Juan Alanis secured unanimous support for his first two public safety bills in the Assembly Public Safety Committee today.

After weeks of negotiations, AB 335 (Proposition 47 – Study) was amended by Assemblymember Alanis to find common ground on the often contentious debate encompassing Proposition 47. Today’s version of the bill would ask the Little Hoover Commission to conduct a nonpartisan and in-depth study about the effects Proposition 47 has had on California, especially concerning the impacts of retail thefts across the state. The bill now heads to the Assembly Committee on Appropriations.

“I have said since the first day I introduced AB 335 that if there is a way to find bipartisan common ground on this issue, I will take it,” said Assemblymember Alanis. “I am proud we could have serious conversations and move the ball forward with our amendments. AB 335 will help us get real answers to serious open questions on Proposition 47. Getting real data back will help us do our jobs better as legislators. I am proud of the progress we have made in the last two weeks.”

AB 355 (POST: Certified Rifle Training) will streamline training standards for law enforcement cadets undergoing state-mandated training requirements for long rifle certification. This bill now heads to the Assembly Floor for consideration by the entire State Assembly.

“I am not sure when the last time a Republican got two bills out of the public safety committee unanimously,” added Assemblymember Alanis. “But it is a testament to the commitment staff and I have made towards building relationships and finding common ground issues for all Californians. I look forward to continuing to work on these laws to earn the support of the entire legislature.”

Assemblymember Juan Alanis represents the 22nd Assembly District, which includes the communities of Modesto, Turlock, Ceres, Denair, Patterson, Gustine, Newman, Hilmar, Ballico, Snelling, Keyes, Grayson, Crows Landing, Diablo Grande, Stevinson, & Empire.
