ALANIS SUPPLEMENTAL YOUTH SPORTS SAFETY LEGISLATION HEADS TO THE GOVERNOR

SACRAMENTO – Today, Assemblymember Juan Alanis announced that Assembly Bill 310 passed a final vote in the Legislature. The bill is a supplement to the Neveah Youth Sports Safety Act, authored by Alanis and signed into law in 2023.

“I am proud of the work my team and I have done alongside the Eric Paredes Save a Life Foundation to ensure stronger safeguards for youth athletes,” said Alanis.  “Throughout the legislative process, we engaged in numerous discussions with both supporters and critics of the bill. Notably, the American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO), which initially opposed the bill, ultimately shifted to a position of support following amendments that addressed their concerns.”

AB 310 will require youth sports organizations to have a written emergency response plan in place that includes the location of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and outlines standard procedures in the event of a cardiac emergency.

Sudden cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death among student athletes. AB 310 will help protect young athletes by ensuring access to an AED during practices and matches. The bill also mandates that youth sports organizations perform routine testing and maintenance of their AEDs, further ensuring they are ready when needed. This legislation builds on previous progress in youth sports safety and aims to enhance protections for young athletes in the environments where they play and compete.

AB 310 has received strong bipartisan support throughout its journey in the Legislature. “I want to thank Assemblymember Ward and Senator Menjivar for their support of the bill as it went through their respective committees – the Assembly Arts, Entertainment, Sports, and Tourism Committee and the Senate Health Committee.”

With AB 310 now on the Governor’s Desk, California has the opportunity to take a critical step forward in protecting the health and safety of young athletes across the state.

Assemblymember Juan Alanis represents the 22nd Assembly District, which includes the communities of Modesto, Turlock, Ceres, Denair, Patterson, Gustine, Newman, Hilmar, Ballico, Snelling, Keyes, Grayson, Crows Landing, Diablo Grande, Stevinson, & Empire.
