SACRAMENTO – Today, Assemblymember Juan Alanis (R-Modesto) announced that Governor Gavin Newsom has signed his election transparency bill, Assembly Bill 17 (AB 17), into law. This measure requires counties to provide free, digital access to precinct boundary maps—giving Californians the tools to better understand their voting districts and actively engage in the democratic process.
“With district lines changing every ten years due to redistricting and precinct maps often being changed even at a higher rate, voters deserve easy access to the information that powers our democracy,” said Assemblymember Alanis. “AB 17 ensures that no voter is left in the dark, giving every Californian the clarity they need to confidently participate in elections and shape our state’s future.”
AB 17 addresses a critical gap in current law by mandating that local election officials publish precinct maps online at no cost. As technology continues to shape how we access information, this bill modernizes California’s election infrastructure. It ensures that essential voting information is accessible to all residents—regardless of location, income, or technological proficiency. By standardizing access across the state’s 58 counties, AB 17 promotes equity and removes long-standing barriers that have made it harder for rural, low-income, and older Californians to participate.
This new law not only supports individual voters, but also candidates, campaign workers, and community groups—making civic participation more informed and election processes more efficient.
AB 17 is part of Assemblymember Alanis’ broader effort to modernize California’s election system, build public trust, and increase voter participation. It will go into effect on January 1, 2026, and marks the 17th bill authored by Alanis to be signed into law—underscoring his commitment to practical, impactful reforms for Californians.
The proposal is the first authored legislation by Alanis to be signed into law this year. It is his seventeenth bill total signed by the Governor.
Assemblymember Juan Alanis represents the 22nd Assembly District, which includes the communities of Modesto, Turlock, Ceres, Denair, Patterson, Gustine, Newman, Hilmar, Ballico, Snelling, Keyes, Grayson, Crows Landing, Diablo Grande, Stevinson, & Empire.
