SACRAMENTO – Assemblymember Juan Alanis praised the unanimous passage of Senate Bill 14 off of the Assembly Floor today in a unanimous 80-0 vote.
SB 14 would make the human trafficking of a minor a serious felony in the State of California. The bill failed in its first vote before the Assembly Public Safety Committee, with only Republicans Juan Alanis and Tom Lackey voting in favor. It was given a historical second vote several days later and advanced through the Assembly Appropriations Committee prior to coming before the entire body of the State Assembly today.
“This bill should not be a controversial issue,” said Assemblyman Juan Alanis. “Our number one goal as a society, as a legislature, as Californians, and as Americans should be to protect our children.”
State Senator Shannon Grove (R-Bakersfield) authored the measure. Alanis joined more than 60 members of the California State Legislature in co-authoring the bill.
“Thank you to Senator Grove for championing this cause,” added Alanis. “Additionally, thank you to the many members on both sides of the aisle, and both houses, for supporting this policy. This bill is about protecting our kids. It sends the strongest message to the worst in our society that those who would sell our children for labor or sex will be severely punished and held accountable.”
SB 14 will now head back to the Senate for concurrence on Assembly amendments before heading to the Governor’s Desk for a signature.
Assemblymember Juan Alanis represents the 22nd Assembly District, which includes the communities of Modesto, Turlock, Ceres, Denair, Patterson, Gustine, Newman, Hilmar, Ballico, Snelling, Keyes, Grayson, Crows Landing, Diablo Grande, Stevinson, & Empire.
