SACRAMENTO— Today, Assemblymember Juan Alanis announced that AB 1728 unanimously passed the Senate Education Committee. This bill would add firefighting and law enforcement courses to the existing Common Course Numbering system at California Community Colleges.
“Expanding the Common Course Numbering system to include fire and police courses will better serve students pursuing careers in public safety,” said Assemblymember Alanis. “By standardizing these courses across California Community Colleges, this bill will help strengthen the pipeline for first responders and reduce barriers that can delay students from completing their education.”
This legislation builds upon AB 1111 (Berman), which established the Common Course Numbering system to ensure that general education courses share a common course number across all California Community Colleges. The previous numbering system often caused confusion for students, particularly those transferring between colleges.
AB 1728 passed the Senate Education Committee by a 7-0 vote and now advances to the Senate Appropriations Committee.
Assemblymember Juan Alanis represents the 22nd Assembly District, which includes the communities of Modesto, Turlock, Ceres, Denair, Patterson, Gustine, Newman, Hilmar, Ballico, Snelling, Keyes, Grayson, Crows Landing, Diablo Grande, Stevinson, & Empire.
