ALANIS HIGHER EDUCATION BILL TO EXPAND COMMON COURSE NUMBERING SYSTEM MOVES ON TO STATE SENATE

SACRAMENTO— Today, Assemblymember Juan Alanis announced that AB 1728 passed the Assembly floor vote. The bill expands the Common Course Numbering (CCN) system within the California Community Colleges (CCC) to include firefighting and law enforcement courses.

This legislation builds upon AB 1111 (Berman), which established the Common Course Numbering system to ensure that general education courses share a common course number across all CCCs. The previous numbering system often caused confusion for students, particularly those transferring from one college to another.

“We must do more to address critical first responder shortages in our communities. Quick response times are essential to public safety, but adequate staffing is needed to make that possible. By making it easier for prospective students to register for these courses, we can help close those gaps,” said Alanis.

Data has shown that California falls behind the national average in its ratio of law enforcement officers to population. In 2024, California counties averaged fewer than two officers for every 1,000 residents.

“I am grateful for my Assembly colleagues’ support for this legislation. Our community colleges play an important role in preparing our future workforce with the skills they need to succeed, which will positively impact our communities,” said Alanis.

The bill passed the Assembly floor with a unanimous vote and will now advance to the State Senate for consideration.

Assemblymember Juan Alanis represents the 22nd Assembly District, which includes the communities of Modesto, Turlock, Ceres, Denair, Patterson, Gustine, Newman, Hilmar, Ballico, Snelling, Keyes, Grayson, Crows Landing, Diablo Grande, Stevinson, & Empire.
