ALANIS BILL TO EXPAND DISABLED VETERAN LICENSE PLATE PROGRAM PASSES SECOND COMMITTEE

SACRAMENTO— Assemblymember Juan Alanis (R-Modesto) announced today that the Assembly Military and Veterans Affairs Committee unanimously approved Assembly Bill 1765.

Today’s vote reflects a strong, bipartisan commitment to supporting those who have served our country,” said Assemblymember Alanis. “AB 1765 makes a practical update to ensure the Disabled Veteran Fee Exemption Program better aligns with the vehicles many veterans rely on in their daily lives.”

AB 1765 will expand eligibility for the Disabled Veteran (DV) fee exemption by increasing the allowable unladen vehicle weight from 8,000 to 10,000 pounds. This change would allow more disabled veterans and qualifying service members to register commonly used heavy-duty vehicles under the program for recreational purposes. Many veterans rely on outdoor recreation to support their physical and mental well-being, particularly those managing service-connected conditions such as post-traumatic stress, anxiety, and depression. However, many heavy-duty vehicles used for these activities exceed the current weight limit under the fee exemption program.

The research is clear, access to outdoor spaces and recreational activities can significantly improve mental health outcomes for veterans,” Alanis added. “Thank you to my colleagues for voting in support of this bill that honors veterans and ensures their needs are supported.”

AB 1765 will now await consideration in the Assembly Appropriations Committee.
