ALANIS CONSUMER PROTECTION BILL SIGNED INTO LAW

SACRAMENTO — Governor Gavin Newsom has signed Assembly Bill 2085 (AB 2085) into law, marking an important step forward in strengthening consumer protections and promoting transparency in commercial transactions across California.

“Every Californian deserves confidence that the transactions they participate in are fair, accurate, and transparent,” said Assemblymember Alanis. “AB 2085 closes a loophole in consumer protections by allowing both buyers and sellers to clearly see the measurements that determine the value of a transaction. This is a common-sense measure that strengthens transparency and fairness across California.”

AB 2085 requires that commercial weighing and measuring devices are positioned so both parties in a transaction can clearly see the results. The bill also strengthens requirements for transparency in point-of-sale pricing systems.

Current law does not fully protect individuals in all transaction types, particularly in industries like recycling, where consumers are often selling materials rather than purchasing them. AB 2085 closes this gap by protecting the visibility of measurements regardless of who is buying or selling.

AB 2085 reflects Assemblymember Alanis’ continued commitment to protecting consumers and fostering transparency in everyday business transactions.

This is the first Alanis bill signed into law in 2026; it is his 20th bill signed by the Governor since being first elected to the State Assembly in 2022.

Assemblymember Juan Alanis represents the 22nd Assembly District, which includes the communities of Modesto, Turlock, Ceres, Denair, Patterson, Gustine, Newman, Hilmar, Ballico, Snelling, Keyes, Grayson, Crows Landing, Diablo Grande, Stevinson, & Empire.
