SACRAMENTO – Today, Assemblymember Alanis announced that his bill, AB 1572, which improves safety in school sports, has passed its second committee with amendments to further strengthen accountability and oversight.
AB 1572 codifies the California Interscholastic Federation’s (CIF) policy requiring annual verification that high school sports officials meet the same background check requirements as any adult who has contact with California students. The bill also establishes standardized safety training requirements to ensure all officials are held to consistent statewide standards.
“We are grateful for the work of the Chair and committee to strengthen this bill,” said Assemblymember Alanis.
Committee amendments will phase in additional safeguards to enhance student safety and transparency. Under the amended bill, existing provisions will take effect on January 1, 2027. Beginning July 1, 2028, all sports officials will be required to obtain and maintain an Activity Supervisor Clearance Certificate issued by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) to register and remain eligible to officiate.
The amendments also require CTC to publish on its website a list of individuals whose Activity Supervisor Clearance Certificate has been suspended or revoked, increasing transparency and accountability. Additionally, the bill clarifies that CIF will maintain the eligibility platform for officials and is not considered their employer.
AB 1572 will strengthen safety and accountability standards across all CIF-officiated sports by ensuring that only properly vetted and qualified officials are permitted to officiate games and events.
AB 1572 passed the Assembly Committee on Education on consent and will next move to the Assembly floor for a vote.
