SACRAMENTO – Today, Assemblymember Alanis announced that his bill, AB 1572, which improves safety in school sports, has passed its first committee. AB 1572 codifies the California Interscholastic Federation’s (CIF) new policy requiring annual verification that high school sports officials meet the same background check requirements as any other adult who has contact with California students.
“This bill takes an important step forward to enhance the safeguards for high school athletic programs statewide. Requiring CIF to verify that sports officials have completed necessary trainings will undoubtable improve competition and safety in schools,” said Assemblymember Alanis.
AB 1572 will strengthen safety and accountability standards across all CIF-officiated sports by ensuring that only properly verified and qualified officials are allowed to officiate games and events. This bill will also require officials to meet standardized safety training requirements, holding all officials in California to the same standards.
