I joined this bipartisan package of important public safety bills to deliver on my promise to find common ground wherever possible to deliver quick action and real results on public safety issues like retail theft. When I signed on to this bipartisan package, I did so because I believed it was an important step forward in addressing retail theft across our state. This bill package is not just a set of bills; it’s a testament to our commitment to the safety and security of Californians.
I am frustrated with and have questions about the possible proposed new amendments. I have talked with leadership on both sides of the aisle about my concerns, and I hope they will be taken seriously. I am encouraged by the promise that my bill, AB 1972, will not be amended. I will be watching very closely over the coming days as this situation continues to evolve. However, it continues to be my belief that the voters have the right to weigh in on policies they have previously set for themselves. I have negotiated and worked in good faith with all parties throughout this process, and I will continue my efforts to be a voice of reason in the days ahead.
