SACRAMENTO – Assemblymember Juan Alanis (R-Modesto) announced today that the Assembly Transportation Committee has unanimously approved Assembly Bill 1765.
“I am grateful for my colleagues’ bipartisan support of this measure,” said Assemblymember Alanis. “By expanding the Disabled Veteran Fee Exemption Program, veterans will have greater access to California’s natural beauty, which can support their reintegration into civilian life.”
AB 1765 increases the weight threshold for commercial motor vehicles eligible for the Disabled Veteran (DV) fee exemption from 8,000 to 10,000 pounds. This change will allow qualifying disabled veterans and decorated service members to register heavier-duty vehicles under the program.
Many veterans rely on recreational camping and outdoor activities to help manage service-connected conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depression. Research shows that time spent outdoors can reduce PTSD symptoms and complement traditional mental health treatment. However, many vehicles commonly used for these activities—including 2500- and 3500-series pickup trucks—exceed the current 8,000-pound unladen weight limit, making them ineligible under existing law.
“Our service members have sacrificed so much to protect the American Dream and the freedoms we often take for granted,” Alanis added. “This bill is one way California can honor its commitment to those who took the oath.”
AB 1765 now moves to the Assembly Military and Veterans Affairs Committee for further consideration.
Assemblymember Juan Alanis represents the 22nd Assembly District, which includes the communities of Modesto, Turlock, Ceres, Denair, Patterson, Gustine, Newman, Hilmar, Ballico, Snelling, Keyes, Grayson, Crows Landing, Diablo Grande, Stevinson, & Empire.
