SACRAMENTO– Today, Assemblymember Juan Alanis announced that his bill to integrate firefighting and law enforcement education courses into the Common Course Numbering (CCN) system at the California Community Colleges (CCC) has passed its first committee.
In 2021, AB 1111 (Berman) established the common course numbering system for general education and transfer pathway courses. This legislation was intended to make it easier for transfer students to understand course equivalents across community colleges and public universities. The system is currently being implemented in phases.
“AB 1728 is a common-sense measure that builds on my colleague’s original proposal by including firefighting and law enforcement classes in the Common Course Numbering system,” said Assemblymember Alanis. “As education requirements for first responders increase, this bill will help ensure our future firefighters and peace officers can meet prerequisites and join the workforce more efficiently.”
The bill is supported by the Yosemite Community College District, which claimed that AB 1728 would streamline training, support career advancement, and improve clarity for public safety employees.
“This bill is an important step for the first responder community,” Alanis added. “As the system continues to be rolled out, we want to make sure it works efficiently and benefits as many Californian students as possible.”
AB 1728 passed the Assembly Higher Education Committee with a 10-0-0 vote and will now head to the Assembly Appropriations Committee.
Assemblymember Juan Alanis represents the 22nd Assembly District, which includes the communities of Modesto, Turlock, Ceres, Denair, Patterson, Gustine, Newman, Hilmar, Ballico, Snelling, Keyes, Grayson, Crows Landing, Diablo Grande, Stevinson, & Empire.
