SACRAMENTO – Today, Assemblymember Juan Alanis proudly announced that his bill to increase healthcare accessibility, AB 1902, passed the Assembly Floor with zero opposition.

“AB 1902 is a long-overdue bill that requires pharmacies to provide accessible labels on prescription medications to patients identifying as blind or having low vision,” said Assemblymember Alanis. “I am thankful for the advocates and stakeholders who helped me turn this idea into a reality to benefit Californians.”

The bill was sponsored by the California Council of the Blind and marks a significant win for the community that has continuously advocated for healthcare accommodations. If signed into law, AB 1902 will ensure that patients who cannot read traditional, written English will be given accessible prescription medication labels.

“I am proud to end the decade-long fight for equality in the pharmaceutical sales space,” added Alanis. “Just as California has required the Board of Pharmacy to provide translations to patients who do not speak English, this bill would ensure that patients who are blind or have low-vision can also accurately interpret their prescription labels.”

AB 1902 is the sixth Alanis proposal to reach the Governor’s desk this year.

Assemblymember Juan Alanis represents the 22nd Assembly District, which includes the communities of Modesto, Turlock, Ceres, Denair, Patterson, Gustine, Newman, Hilmar, Ballico, Snelling, Keyes, Grayson, Crows Landing, Diablo Grande, Stevinson, & Empire.
